About Me
Jordan Cotter is a clarinet player and teacher from Hurst Texas and graduated from L.D. Bell High School in 2020. He's been a music composer for nine years and a performer on clarinet for twelve. Jordan is a passionate teacher and musician who is studying music education at the University of North Texas (Denton TX) with an expected graduation date of May 2025. He hopes to teach middle or high school band in Texas after graduation and plans to continue his study of music with a master's degree in conducting or multiple woodwind performance.
Jordan took an interest in composing when he was 13 playing in junior high band. He listened to arrangements of popular music for wind band and started trying to replicate the music and timbre of a concert band. Later he started listening to orchestra music and fell in love with the colors of the symphony. Romanticism and early modernism are his favorite genres of music. Debussy, Mahler, Ravel, and Rachmaninoff are some of Jordan’s favorite composers with his favorite work being Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony “Resurrection.” Jordan began his collegiate career as a double major in music education and composition before narrowing down his studies to focus fully on education. Jordan still loves writing music and has written for a diversity of ensemble types including concert bands, chamber ensembles, and solos of various instruments. Having played in debut chamber groups, orchestras, and solo performances, Jordan loves performing new music with composers.
Jordan gained his passion for teaching while in high school marching band as he led the clarinet section through the marching season. Through his passion for music and performance and his love for teaching he studied music education at UNT and strived to gain as much experience as he could while in school. Jordan took 36 extra credits of electives while at UNT ranging from classes on music theory, instrument repair, performance repertoire, and secondary instrument lessons on flute and oboe. Jordan has played oboe for three years, and flute for two.
Jordan is excited for the future of his musical and teaching journey. He hopes to continue his education and gain experience in teaching to refine his ability as a band director. While not performing or writing music, Jordan spends time with his dog Emma, and cat Sergie. He loves walking, hiking, and camping in his free time. Jordan is a massive Star Trek fan and enjoys science fiction and thriller books and media.
